You can work on three separate tasks at once now. As a bonus it also extends slap duration.

They can be used to carry out additional tasks, in addition to extending the slap time.

There's a bug or two currently in-game (that are hopefully getting fixed in the near future) that sometimes makes it appear as if you should have imps available for tasks, when in fact they're actually all currently occupied with previous jobs. And another revolving around upgrade times, etc.

But back to your original question: yes, additional imps allow for additional tasks.

How did you get a third imp? Is it only possible with a gem purchase or do they come with a dungeon heart upgrade?

If they come with a dungeon heart upgrade and I unlock one early with a gem purchase, do I still get one with the room upgrade?

Imps can only be bought with gems.

You can get free gems from the achievements , weekly survival raids and digging 4/24 hours dirt.

Current values are:

Imp 2 (gained during Tutorial): 100
Imp 3: 800
Imp 4: 1200
Imp 5: 2100
Imp 6: 4200

If you need ideas:

Pro: Bonus 10%/20%/40%/80%/160%/320% (if allowing multiple; alternate would be 50%/100% if single) to production rate (Diminishing? Progressive returns? depending on how many you place inside?)

Cons: Can't remove them for (four? Eight? Sixteen?... Twenty-four?) hours. (Selection possible? The longer they're sent in, you get bonus 10% production-ish?)
